TIFF iFilter

The news should not be out untill the official announcement at the Microsoft SharePoint Conference on March 3, but because Microsoft has leeked the information themselves (see here, and here), I can post this now too.

One of the products where I am involved as a consultant is the TIFF iFilter. The TIFF iFilter automatically processes scanned images that are stored in SharePoint document libraries, using the Captaris OCR engine to extract the full text of each page and send the text to Microsoft’s indexing engine. Within moments, the images are ready to be searched and retrieved across the enterprise using keywords that exist on the scanned page. The TIFF iFilter supports Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, Search Server 2008 and Search Server 2008 Express. The TIFF IFilter will be available by mid MS Q4 (so Q2 of 2008).

Today we finished testing our current verion, and everything is up and running. So we have really something to show for at the conference. This was really a great project to work on, and is part of our brand new product line around handling paper documents in SharePoint. Being part of setting up such a completely new product line from scratch, are really exciting times for an intrapreneur...

Update:
For more information on the Captaris TIFF iFilter have a look here.
